Evaluation
I think that my show has the
potential to be successful with my target audience as it is similar to a really
popular show that was really successful with the same target audience. It
also has a few hooks that will attract the audience in. For example, the two main
characters are teenagers and live a similar life to what majority of teenagers/young
adults live nowadays, that being partying a lot and trying new things. This
will also attract the target audience as the main characters being the same age
as a lot of the viewers they will have the same sense of humour and the same
thoughts so the viewers can in some way figure out how they feel and they can put
themselves in their shoes and imagine what it would be like to be in that position.
Representation
The way that my representation differs from those in The Apartment is that in my show there isn’t as many female characters as in that show. In my show there is only two female characters that have some significance in the scene. Another way that my show differs from The Apartment representation wise is age, in my show there is a wide range of ages, majority of the characters being teenagers/ young adults not older that 19 whereas in The Apartment majority if not all of the characters are grown male/female in their late 30’s.
The current social and political climate has influenced me to make sure that I include both genders and to make sure that there aren’t any stereotypes about certain people. I made sure that all my characters are represented in a way the audience would expect them to be represented after the characters being introduced and given a small idea of what they are like.
My cast isn’t extremely diverse, majority of the characters are white male or female that are straight, there is a few black and Asian characters in my show but they appear later on and have significance in the show later on as well. All of my characters are straight and have no disabilities. Eventually, one of the characters does become disabled in the show but that is almost at the end of the season. Next time I think I could have added a more diverse cast from the start of the show and make each character different in some sort of way. I made sure that the female characters in my show have some sort of power and are not used for pleasure or as an object.
Genre
I think that the main genres that Influenced my series
would have to be; Crime, Drama and Action. I borrowed something from each of
the genres to help me build my show around and help me influence my audience through
them. From Crime genre I borrowed gangs, conflict and drugs. I used this genre
as a base of my series as majority of the situations in the series are crime
related so that genre fit my series really well. From drama I borrowed relationship
as that will help to create a connection not only between each of the characters
but also between the characters and the audience.
I have made it so that my show is different as in a
lot of shows at the end the bad guy loses and the good guys win, whereas in my
show it’s the other way around. At the end of the season the bad guys are the one that win as the kill one of the brothers and leave the other one to watch his death.
I have used conventions like real locations to attract people that are watching or wanting to watch the series, as they might recognise the area or the surrounding and that might pull them into the series more if they know the area it's in as they might want to see how the area is represented as in the series.Narrative
The narrative structure helped me by using a story arc to plan my episodes ahead, and create scenarios with conflict or other themes in the series that could end in the episode or continue over to the next episode.
Narrative wise I used basically nothing from The Apartment as my series is completely different to The Apartment, theme and character wise. The only thing that is similar with my series to the Apartment is that the apartment is one of the key locations in both of the series/film.
Semiotics
I tried making mine look basic but bold at the same time, I didn't want it to be too fancy as a lot of crime/drama thriller title sequences aren't colourful or fancy they are basic and to the point, the same goal I was going for. I tried using some colour to make it too boring and not too old fashion. I also tried using imagery that are relative to the series to give an idea of what is going to happen in the series.I want the viewers to get a feeling of what they are going to see in the series and get a feeling of what the mood in the series is going to be like from the colours and the font, also from the images.
Excellent evaluation. You have got a good grasp of many media terms and concepts. Well done.
